1927-2013 Claire Ruth Merrill Miller, 85, of Winter Haven, Florida, died June 12, 2013 at Winter Haven Hospital.
Born November 14, 1927 in Collins, New York to Fred Collins Merrill and Charlotte Southwick Merrill, Mrs. Miller has lived in Florida for the past twenty years after retiring from the United States Peace Corps.
Mrs. Miller grew up in Gowanda, New York on the family farm and graduated with her degree in nursing from the University of Buffalo and her Master's degree in Nursing Administration from Russell Sage College. She spent much of her life as a public health nurse in Berkshire County, Massachusetts where she lived with her children in the small town of Stockbridge.
Mrs. Miller considered her work in the Peace Corps, from 1987 to 1994, to be her greatest accomplishment. She worked to improve public health programs and services in the Gambia (West Africa), Nepal, and Jamaica. After her retirement she worked for VISTA, and was an active member in the DAR and the Mayflower Society of Florida. She was also a volunteer for the Winter Haven Blood Bank. She loved working on the family genealogy and watching the Boston Red Sox.
Her daughters, Elizabeth Volz Miller and Catherine Miller Perkins, both of Vermont, and her son Brian Merrill Miller of Virginia, survive Mrs. Miller. She also leaves six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her son Marshall Miller of Maine, and her sister Faye Merrill Bowman.
There will be no funeral in Florida. Her family will remember her in New England where she spent most of her life. She will be laid to rest with her parents in Gowanda, New York.
