Agnes Rita Spratlin

1917-2013 PITTSFIELD Mrs. Agnes Rita Murphy Spratlin, age 95, a lifelong Pittsfield resident, died Saturday night at the Berkshire Medical Center. She was born in Pittsfield, Oct. 28, 1917, the daughter of the late Mark A. and Agnes Conway Murphy. In November 1943, Rita married Samuel A. Spratlin, who died in January 1996. She was educated in the local schools and was a 1937 graduate of Pittsfield High School. She trained as a nurse at the former Hillcrest Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1939, and worked as a nurse for a number of years, after raising her family she returned to nursing full time at the former Hillcrest Hospital. Rita owned Murphy-Spratlin Gift Shops at the old Curtis Hotel, Lenox, at the Red Lion Inn, Stockbridge, and in Pittsfield. Mrs. Spratlin was a communicant of St. Mark's Church and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a student of politics throughout her life and served as chairman for the Berkshire County Republican Association for many years. Rita enjoyed working the polls at Ward 6 B, where she was the warden until 2008. Often she led lively political discussions with family and friends. She was the beloved mother of Amy Spratlin Brooks and her husband, Clifton, of St. Cloud, Fla.; Samuel A. Spratlin, Jr. and his wife, Ellen, of Wethersfield, Conn.; Norah Spratlin Marcel, and her husband Louis, of Richmond, Mass.; Marie Spratlin Hasskarl, and her partner, Ray Olsen of Burlington, Conn.; and Thomas Spratlin, and his wife, Kathy Winiarski of Cheshire, Mass. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Ruth Ann, Heather, Carolyn, Timothy, Clifton, Peter, and Jenna; nine great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Alexander, Justus, Brandon, Taylor, Jasper, Elizabeth, Chloe, and Phoebe; as well as her many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her eight brothers and sisters, George, Elizabeth, Marion, Margaret, Donald, Mark, Robert and Richard. FUNERAL NOTICE: Agnes Rita Spratlin, age 95 of Pittsfield, died Saturday evening. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark's Church with the Rev. John C. Salatino, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday morning at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME beginning at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, friends and family may make donations to St. Mark's Church, in care of the Devanny-Condron Funeral Home .
