Alfons Lysy Obituary
Alfons Lysy

1918-2014 Alfons Lysy, 95 of Housatonic passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 2, 2014. Alfons Lysy was born On June 3, 1918 in the village of Sub Sloboda, Poland to the late Jozef and Anna Kuziemko Lysy. He was the second of six children, John, Kazimir, Vincent, Josephine and Maria. Alfons joined the Polish Navy in 1938 and served until the navy was disbanded due to the Russian and German invasion of Poland. He and his family, along with their whole village, which was burned to the ground, were forcibly removed to Nazi Germany in 1943, to serve as forced labor. They were liberated by the British in 1945. They lived in the refugee camp, having no home to return to until 1949 when Alfons and his family were able to immigrate to the United States, settling in Housatonic Mass. Alfons was a communicant of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Church, Corpus Christi Parrish and for many years prior was an active member of All Saints Church in Housatonic, before it closed. He worked for Monument Mills and the Rising Paper Mill until retiring in 1983. Alfons loved the outdoors and had a green thumb. He could make anything grow, outside and in. His vegetable garden was the envy of the neighborhood. Alfons was also a consummate do-it-youselfer and could fix or build anything. He never threw anything away but fixed it instead. Alfons was predeceased by his wife of fifty nine years, Maria Osasko Lysy in 2001. He will be sadly missed by his two sons; Stanley and his wife Danuta, John and his wife Barbara, his five grandchildren, Christopher Lysy, Ashlee Provencher, Teresa Mendoza, Joanna Lackey and Andrea Lysy, and his great grandchildren, Brady and Madison Mendoza, Riley and Ryan Lackey, Hazel Lysy and Ryan Holguin, his sister Maria Cierniewski and nephews, Joe, John, Frank, George and Robert Cierniewski, his friends and neighbors especially, Eileen Pennvenne, a special friend who was a great source of comfort and help to Alfons for many years.
