1926 - 2015 PITTSFIELD Alma Rose Howard, 89, died June 30, 2015 at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center, Lenox, MA. She was born on April 15, 1926 in North Adams, the daughter of the late Paul and Edith Crippa Merlino. Her early education was in North Adams. Alma was a 1943 graduate of Pittsfield High School and in 1951 received a Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University. She then became the Director of Nursing at Hillcrest Hospital and later she was appointed a public health nurse by Dr. Harold Stein for the city of Pittsfield. Following that position she became an instructor in the Pittsfield Vocational School of Nursing. Alma married Robert Howard, a POW and retired Postal Carrier, on April 3, 1981. They spent a wonderful 10 years enjoying the best in life. She loved creating oil paintings, ushering at Tanglewood, golfing, going to the beach with Robert and spending time with her family. Survivors include her brother, Paul C. Merlino and his wife, Sandra of Lenox, nieces, Paula Disano of Scituate MA, Susan Love and her husband, Peter of Lenox, her stepdaughters, Daril Scorpa and her husband, Tom of Pittsfield and Linda Brown and her husband, Cameron of Las Cruces, N.M. She also leaves 5 great-nephews and nieces: Mia and Nic Disano, Dennis, Evan and Gianna Love, three step-granddaughters: Julie Walsh and her husband, John of Milton, MA., their two children, Patrick Joseph and Caroline, Monica Waggoner of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Michelle Omann of Killeen Texas. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert who died November 21, 1991. The family wishes to thank the staff at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center for their exceptional care and compassion to Alma during her stay. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Alma R. Howard will be (TODAY) Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. Ann's Church, 132 Main St., Lenox, MA, celebrated by the Rev. Christopher A. Waitekus, Pastor. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Pittsfield, MA. There are no calling hours.
