Obituary Condolences

Annette Bernstein

On September 12, 2012, Annette Bernstein, formerly of York, Pa., and later of West Stockbridge, Mass., died gracefully and peacefully in her apartment at RiverWalk, part of the Hebrew Home of Riverdale. She was 91. She was the daughter of Ben and Esther Chusid, sister of the late Frederick Chusid, wife of the late Jules Bernstein and of second husband, the late Madison Cotlowitz; mother of Elaine Resnick, Marcia Bernstein and Nan Bernstein Freed; mother-in-law of Richard Resnick, Michael Madison and Paul Freed; grandmother of six, great-grandmother of eight; an aunt and a cousin. She was a surrogate parent, grandparent and great grand-parent to an extended family she gathered into her arms along the way. She had numerous grand-dogs who also enjoyed her love. And she was a friend to too many people to count.

Her tireless community service took her from organizations in York such as Hadassah, the Jewish Community Center, Head Start, Meals-on-Wheels, Ohev Sholom Synagogue, The Ladies Auxillary, and York Little Theater, among others, to The Jewish Federation, Hadassah, the Berkshire Botanical Gardens, a literacy group and several theater companies in Massachusetts. She also took many courses through ElderHostel and later, through a similar Berkshires life-long learning center called Ollie. She is credited by RiverWalk as having founded a theater group there.

After Jules died in 1987, Annette moved to New York City and soon became a group leader for Hadassah trips to Israel, where she taught English as a second language to recently emigrated Ethiopian Jews. Through her life, Annette variously served as a volunteer, an advocate, a president, a community organizer, and a teacher. She also was a curious traveler and avid reader, a fun hostess, a bridge player, a performer and a beloved neighbor.

The family requests that any donations in her honor be made to either Hebrew Home of Riverdale (attn: Development Office; notations "RiverWalk", Annette Bernstein), 5961 Palisade Avenue, Bronx NY 10471, or to Stefanie Steel, VNSNY Hospice, 1250 Broadway 7th floor, NY, NY 10001 ("in memory of Annette Bernstein").
