Anthony John Castronova, Jr.

1917 - 2014 PITTSFIELD Anthony John Castronova, Jr., of Side by Side Assisted Living, 120 Onota St., formerly of Columbia Arms, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, after a brief illness. Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 10, 1917, the son of Anthony J. Castronova, Sr. and Angeline Monteleone Castronova, he was a graduate of Pittsfield High School and attended Franklin Technical Institute in Boston. A veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, Mr. Castronova served with the United States Coast Guard from Sept. 1942 to Dec. 1945. He then transferred to the United States Navy Reserves from where he was called to active duty from Sept. 1950 to Nov. 1950. Mr. Castronova was employed by the General Electric Company for 37 years as an electronic electrician retiring in 1980. He was a Shop Steward for Local 255 AFL-CIO, and was a member of the G.E. Quarter Century and Pensioners Clubs. He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church. Mr. Castronova was very active in the YMCA and won the YMCA swim lap awards for completing 500 miles, 1000 miles, and 3000 miles. He was a member of the Ralph E. Froio Senior Center where he was very active in their musicals and plays. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the G.E.A.A. He was an avid sports fan and loved to watch the New York Yankees and New York Giants. Mr. Castronova is survived by a son, Anthony J. Castronova, III., of Pittsfield; five daughters, Diane A. Wojtaszek of Cheshire, Jane M. Castronova of Pittsfield, Carolyn G. LeBlanc her husband, Robert, of Pittsfield, Katherine B. Maloney her husband, Edward, of Pittsfield, and Janet P. Bishop her husband, Richard, of Wilmot, N.H.; nine grandchildren, John Wojtaszek, Michael Castronova, Timothy LeBlanc, Thomas LeBlanc, Jennifer Barnett, Jason Baird, Jesse Baird, Devin Maloney, and Kara Maloney; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Joseph J. Castronova; and his two sisters, Carolyn Lingoski, and Jean Salzarulo, all late of Pittsfield. Mr. Castonova's family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Side By Side Assisted Living for their care and kindness. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Anthony John Castronova, Jr., will be held Friday, Nov. 21, at 9:30 a.m., from the DERY FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m, at St. Joseph Church celebrated by the Rev. Msgr. Michael A. Shershanovich, Pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will precede the service, from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church Food Pantry in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
