Anthony J. Virgilio

1926-2012 ASHFIELD Anthony J. Virgilio, 86, died Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at home surrounded by his loving family and friends.

He was born January 20, 1926 in Pittsfield, the youngest of eight children of Bernardino and Maria DiPaulo Virgilio, who emigrated from Abruzzi, Italy in 1905.

As a member of the greatest generation, Anthony served his nation proudly as a tail-gunner flying in the B-29 Superfortress with the 19th Air Force, Pacific theater. Upon his discharge, he attended and graduated from Fairfield University and married Patricia Naughton in 1951. He continued his studies at Boston College where he earned a masters degree in the field of Social Work. He dedicated his life to that profession of helping others. He spent the last years of his career as administrator of the Franklin County branch of Northampton State Hospital.

Anthony was predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia Naughton in January 2000, and his daughter Marianne Bishop in 2007.

He is survived by his friend and companion of ten years, Phyllis Kirkpatrick of Ashfield, Mass., and children Gregory and his partner Peggy of Holyoke, Mass., David and his wife Lisa of Gill, Mass., and Anthony, Jr."Jay", of Westfield, Mass., three grandsons Zachary, Benjamin and Jacob Virgilio and one granddaughter Abby Virgilio, his sister-in-law Elda Virgilio and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Pittsfield.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 34 Monroe Ave., Shelburne Falls. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Arms Cemetery.

Calling hours will take place Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 40 Church St., Shelburne Falls.
