He was a master carpenter by trade for many local unions, an artisian woodworker and a Veteran of the U.S. Army 3rd armor division from 1958 to 1961. He and his wife moved to Fayetteville 9 years ago to be close to his youngest daughter and grandchildren. Mr. Kaufer was an avid historian, voracious reader, furniture maker and outdoorsman. Mostly, he was a devoted family man who adored spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. In his younger years, he enjoyed foraging for mushrooms throughout the Berkshires, trout fishing, tinkering in his garage and swimming in the family pool. Cooking was also a passion, and at least once a year he cooked a special German meal for his family. He made several trips to Germany in his life and stayed connected with his homeland through his subscription to Das Fenster. One of his proudest accomplishments was building the perfect home for his family to grow up in. He enjoyed hours of word searches and long conversations with his friends and family. Catholic by faith, he attended St. Joseph Church when in Pittsfield and read from the Bible daily. He loved his sweet dachshund, Mitzie.
