Arthur Kenyon Ferry, Jr.

1925 - 2015 CAPE CORAL, FLA. Arthur Kenyon Ferry, Jr., 89, passed peacefully on Feb.9. Ken was born July 9, 1925, in Pittsfield, to Arthur Kenyon and Leonora Lehmann Ferry. He attended local schools, graduating from Pittsfield High with letters in both hockey and boxing. In 1942, Ken enlisted in the Volunteer Naval Reserve V-5 Naval Aviation Cadet Program where he went on to become an accomplished Navy pilot and flight instructor. Ken attended various schools including Williams College and the Navy's training programs at Colgate University and the Navy Pre-Flight School in Chapel Hill, NC. He received his commission as a Naval Aviator Officer at Naval Air Station Pensacola, FL. Upon leaving the Navy Ken continued his passion for flight, offering air transportation and flying lessons at what is now the Pittsfield Municipal Airport. Ken joined the family lumber business, C. S. Ferry & Son, formerly located at Center and Church streets in Pittsfield, in 1948. In that same year, he graduated from Bryant College with a degree in Business Administration. Established in 1886, "Ferry's Lumber Yard" helped fuel the growth of Pittsfield and the surrounding county for many years by providing lumber, building materials, and drafting services. Ken became a field underwriter for the New York Life Insurance Company before taking a position with the former Berkshire County Savings Bank as manager of the Savings Bank Life Insurance (SBLI) department in 1965. He graduated from the Brown University Graduate School's Mutual Savings Banks program in 1971 and went on to establish the bank's Pension Services Department. Ken retired as a Vice President in 1978. Ken was very involved in many civic and community organizations including more than 30 years holding various board offices at both the Pittsfield YMCA and the Pittsfield Cemetery. He was also active in Pittsfield's Retired Senior Volunteer Program. He and his wife, Ginny, moved to Sebastian, Fla. in 1988 and then to Cape Coral in 2012. In addition to flying, Ken enjoyed skiing and was an instructor and member of the National Ski Patrol. He also enjoyed playing tennis, golf and visiting with his children and grandchildren. Ken was predeceased by his wife, Virginia "Ginny" (Donald) Ferry, of 55 years in Sept. 2012. Left to cherish his memory are his eldest son, David, wife, Gabriele, and their daughters, Emma and Katherine of Pittsfield; daughter, Pamela Daya, and her husband, Asif, of Punta Gorda, Fla.; son, Donald, wife, Audrey, and their sons, Joshua and Mitchell of Charlotte, N.C. He also leaves fond memories of his good friends in Sebastian, Fla., Pittsfield, and Harwich Port, Mass. In accordance with Ken's wishes there will be no memorial or funeral services.
