1925 - 2016 PITTSFIELD Audrey S. Bitz of Pittsfield, MA, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of her family on January 16, 2016. Born on January 30, 1925 in Wind Gap, PA as the 7:00 AM train rode by, Audrey grew up in an apartment above the train station (where her father was stationmaster) with her sister Elaine and their parents Roscoe and Elizabeth Sweinhart. As a child, she loved being outdoors, playing with the dogs her father raised, and feeding the chickens that her family also raised. After graduating from Pen Argyl High School in 1943, Audrey enrolled at Churchman's Business School in Easton, PA and then held various secretarial positions during WW II. lt was during this time and soon after the war when she met, fell in love with and then married Maurice Bitz on June 28, 1946. Together, they had a daughter, Renee and a son, Kevin. Besides secretarial work, Audrey dedicated much of her time to working with children who were mentally and physically challenged. As a wife and mother, a large part of her life was devoted to her family as a homemaker, though she always found time to volunteer and work to help others. Audrey was very active in her church(Christ Lutheran Church and St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Easton, PA); she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and was a member of the Altar Guild. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, baking and cooking. Those who enjoyed her home-cooked meals and bread were fortunate indeed. She will be remembered by her family and friends for many things, but mostly her loving kindness, generosity and unfailing sense of humor. Audrey was predeceased by her husband, Maurice Bitz, in 1992; her son, Kevin Bitz, in 1996; and her . sister, Elaine Musselman, in 2014. She is survived by her daughter, Renee Beatty and son-in-law, Michael Beatty of Pittsfield, as well as her daughter-in-law, Susan Bitz-Adler of Colorado. Also she is survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE: A private service was held at Dery Funeral Home. On February 8th, a private graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Susan D. Ruggles at Plainfield Cemetery in Pen Argyl, PA where Audrey will be laid to rest beside her husband, Maurice. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the , St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Easton, PA, or Zion Lutheran Church's Restoring and Renewing Capital Campaign in Pittsfield, MA in care of the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201 which is handling local arrangements.
