Barbara Brutsch

1926 - 2014 CANAAN, N.Y. Barbara Brutsch, 88, of Canaan, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning at Springside Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center. Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 19, 1926, the daughter of William H. and Catherine Coakley Richards she was a 1943 graduate of Pittsfield High School and a 1946 graduate of St. Luke's School of Nursing. Mrs. Brutsch worked as a surgical nurse at the former St. Luke's Hospital and also worked at the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge. She later worked for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health until her retirement in 1991. She was co-owner of the Berkshire Spur Escort Service which provided vehicle escort for wide loads on New York State Highways. Barbara and her husband had also owned and operated the Lace House Bed and Breakfast in Canaan. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward O. Brutsch, who died on Jan. 20, 1988. Barbara is survived by her two children, a daughter and longtime caregiver, Margaret Brutsch, of Canaan; a son, Michael Brutsch and his wife, Dawn, of East Chatham, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Brutsch Miller and her husband, Kyle, two grandsons, William Brutsch and Graham Brutsch-Mason and his companion, Lynn Van Allen. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, William David Richards. FUNERAL NOTICE: A graveside funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Brutsch will be Monday, July 28, 2014, at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Cemetery.
