1925 - 2014 STAMFORD, VT. Mrs. Barbara L. Coe, 89 of 178 Poplar Drive, died Saturday Nov. 22, 2014 at North Adams Commons. She was born in Greenwich, Conn. on May 6, 1925, daughter of Guy and Frances (Burr) Lent. She graduated from Greenwich High School with the class of 1943 and attended North Adams State College. During World War II, Barbara served in the USO. She first lived in Port Chester and Rye, N.Y. until she moved to Heartwellville, Vt. with her husband in 1959. Together, they operated the Old Coach Inn there for many years. Barbara was an active member of the Readsboro Baptist Church. She maintained an interest in genealogy and traced her heritage as far back as the Mayflower. Barbara was the former president of the Massachusetts Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served on its state board and was also a member of the Aaron Burr Association. She also served as the president of the Readsboro Historical Society. Barbara was active in politics as a member of the Republican Party in Vermont, and even ran for state representative. Barbara was a longtime correspondent for the North Adams Transcript, and she enjoyed writing poetry and literature. She also enjoyed bowling and travel. While living in New York, she taught dancing through the Arthur Murray Dance School. She was the widow of Melvin H. Coe who died on Apr. 21, 2003. They were married on Feb. 12, 1949. Survivors include two daughters including, Susan Sheehan and her husband, Peter of Perkinsville, VT and Jennifer Dowling and her husband, Michael of Stamford, VT; and two sons including, Gary H. Coe of West Palm Beach, FL and Richard D. Coe and his wife, Lisa of Newport, RI. She also leaves 10 grandchildren including; Thomas Sheehan, Timothy Sheehan, Terry Sheehan, Brian Dowling, Kevin Dowling, Aimee Dowling, Tiffani Coe, Guy Coe, Matthew Coe, and Elizabeth Vaughn; 16 great grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Carr of New London, NH; and 3 nieces. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service for Barbara Coe will be held Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014 at 1 p.m. at the Readsboro Baptist Church. Burial will be in Heartwellville Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
