Barbara Greene Obituary
Barbara Isabelle Greene

1930 - 2015 SOUTH EGREMONT Barbara Isabelle Greene, retired New York City public-school principal, ardent reader, supporter of the arts, and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, died November 5th, in Great Barrington, of an intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke. Born in Brooklyn on May 31, 1930, she was married for 60 years to Martin Greene and together with him took loving care of their two daughters and four grandchildren. She managed to combine being feisty and outspoken with tenderness, great warmth, and a keen sense of humor. Many have said that she was an inspiration to them. She graduated from New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn in 1947, from New York University with a BA, and from St. John's University with an advanced degree in school administration. An intellectual force and a master of the English language, Barbara had a long career in the city schools: as an English teacher, sharing her love of language and literature and as a guidance counselor at Benjamin Franklin High School in Manhattan, encouraging many students to become the first person in their family to attend college and numerous others to pursue their dreams through higher education; as an assistant principal at Jane Addams High School in the Bronx; as a principal at William E. Grady, a vocational high school in Brooklyn; and then as the principal of Newtown High School in Elmhurst. In 1992, Barbara announced she was becoming "leisured for life." She retired to spend more time with her family and her beloved English literature, to travel, and to enjoy endless hours at her home in South Egremont, MA, in the Berkshires, reading The New York Times in her favorite sunny spot, on her deck next to an apple tree. In addition to her husband, Martin, Barbara is survived by two of her sisters, Carol and Jacqueline; two daughters, Elizabeth and Alice; her son-in-law, Curtis Jones; and her four grandchildren: Sam and Ruby Jones and Isabella and Thomas Mungioli. SERVICES: Her memorial service will be held this Sunday, November 8, at 12 Noon at 220 Castle Hill Avenue, Great Barrington, MA. Donations in her honor may be made to (855-948-6437), a charity she admired for its work in helping women in Africa to provide financial security for their families.
