1942 - 2015 PITTSFIELD Barbara Jean Evans Hoctor Kurek, 73, of 147 Cole Avenue, died Thursday, September 17, 2015 at Berkshire Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 14, 1942 in Pittsfield a daughter of the late Raymond C. and Rose M. Sibbio Evans. She attended schools in Pittsfield and was a 1960 graduate of St. Joseph's Central High School where she was the class valedictorian. She also attended the former Berkshire Business College and Berkshire Community College. Barbara was last employed at Sacred Heart Rectory as Bulletin Editor, she also had worked as office manager at Devanny-Condron Funeral Home for several years, she also had worked at Miss Halls School for 34 years in the business office, and also for First Agricultural Bank and the New England Telephone Company. She was a communicant of Saint Joseph's Church and also was a longtime communicant of the former Saint Teresa's Church where she was involved in its music ministry and choir. She was a member of the Sons of Italy ITAM Lodge #564. Barbara was a certified master Reiki Practitioner and teacher of USUI Holy Fire Reiki. She was deeply devoted to her Catholic Faith and enjoyed dancing, gardening, reading, knitting and camping. Her first husband, Timothy D. Hoctor, Sr. whom she married at St. Teresa's Church on July 24, 1965 died December 1, 1990. She is survived by her husband, Richard S. Kurek whom she married at St. Teresa's Church on August 2, 1998. Two sons, Timothy D. Hoctor, Jr. and his wife, Kathryn of Becket and Jeffrey C. Hoctor of Lanesboro. Two stepsons, Richard A. Kurek of Pittsfield and Peter F. Kurek and his wife, Vera of NH. Seven grandchildren, Kevin J. Hoctor, Emily, Julia, Ian, Rose Marie, Peter D. and Toby Kurek. A sister-in-law, Elizabeth Evans of the State of Florida. Two cousins, Rosemary Polidoro of Pittsfield and Patricia Zamora of Las Vegas, NV. She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Evans. Barbara will be especially missed by her Reiki and knitting friends and the love of her life and traveling buddy her husband, Dick, and also by her bird, AJ. The family would also like to thank all the staff at Berkshire Medical Center and Hillcrest professionals for all their kind support and compassion shown to Barbara. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 23, 2015 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10a.m. at Saint Joseph's Church, celebrated by the Rev. Msgr. Michael Shershanovich, pastor. Burial will follow in the family plot at Saint Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St. Pittsfield, MA will be Tuesday from 4 to 7p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials in her memory may be made to the or to the Saint Joseph's Church Food Pantry both in care of the funeral home.
