Berani J. Cartier

1926 - 2015 PITTSFIELD Berani J. Cartier passed away at home on Thursday, October 29, 2015. He leaves his wife of 48 years, Agnes Cartier. The son of Irene Kelly and Joseph Cartier of Fall River, Berani was born in the District of Columbia. He lived the majority of his life in New Jersey, retired to the Berkshires in 2000. Berani served as a Fireman First Class on the USS Frank E. Evans in the Asian Pacific and Philippines and was the recipient of WWII Victory, American and Asiatic Campaign and Philippine Liberation Medals, plus a Presidential Unit Citation. He studied electrical engineering at Syracuse University and worked in drafting and design for a decade then made a career change. He earned a BS in clinical biology from Uppsala University in Orange, NJ and worked as a medical technologist until retirement. An avid skier and sports car enthusiast, Berani served multiple terms as chairman of the New Jersey Council of Sports Car Clubs. He loved animals, especially the many Labrador Retrievers he spoiled over the years. His interests included aviation, astronomy, photography, fine wine, travel and lifelong learning. A kind man with a keen mind and irrepressible sense of humor, he is deeply missed by his wife and extended family, Al Cartier, Fall River, Heidi Wallman and Jeff Olszewski, Hinsdale, Erin Olszewski, Millbury, Harold Wallman, VT, Joan and Pat DeFrancesco, PA, and Mary Wallman, FL. Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery in the spring. Donations in Berani's memory may be sent to Hospice Care in The Berkshires, 877 South St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
