GREAT BARRINGTON and DALTON - Carol J. MacArthur, 82, of Ensign Street in Dalton, former longtime resident of Great Barrington, died Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield
Born July 26, 1929 in Binghamton, New York she was the daughter of James and Dorothy Bryan MacArthur. She graduated from the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and Columbia University and earned her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
Carol dedicated her life to helping others. She was a social worker with the Department of Transitional Assistance for many years.
At various points throughout her life she attended the First Congregational Church in Great Barrington, the Macedonia Baptist Church also in Great Barrington and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Pittsfield.
Carol enjoyed making jewelry, painting (both water colors and with oil) and gardening. She also loved her cats.
She is survived by her brother James MacArthur of Otis, two nephews Aaron MacArthur and his wife Patricia of Dalton, MA and Demetrius MacArthur of Salem, Mass. She also leaves two nieces Patricia MacArthur of Pittsfield, and Melissa MacArthur of Mattapan, Mass.
She was predeceased by her nephew Jeffrey MacArthur.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A service celebrating the life of the late Carol J. MacArthur will be held Friday, April 13, 2012 at 2 p.m. at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington, conducted by Rev. Charles VanAusdall.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.
