Carol L. Parkman

1937-2014 SWANZEY, NH Carol Louise Hayn Parkman. 77, of Swanzey, passed away August 5, 2014 at Cheshire Medical Center Dartmouth Hitchcock following a period of declining health. She was born in Pittsfield, Mass., May 31, 1937, daughter of Donald E. and Rhoda Kennan Hayn. When she was eight years old, her mother passed away and her father remarried Nancy Goodyear when she was 10. Mrs. Parkman grew up in Pittsfield and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1955. She went on to graduate from Hartford (Conn.) Hospital School of Nursing in 1958. On September 27, 1958, she married William Frederick Parkman in Pittsfield. They had a loving marriage of 39 years before his passing in 1997. Mrs. Parkman and her family moved to Swanzey in 1968. She enjoyed her nursing career working at a variety of medical facilities. Most notably, she worked as a school nurse for the Monadnock Regional School District in the towns of Fitzwilliam, Gilsum, Sullivan, Surry, and Troy before retiring after 28 years in 2005. She was an active parishioner at St. James Episcopal Church serving as a Lay Eucharistic Minister for 30 years, vestry for four terms, clerk of the parish for two terms, and assisted on committees where needed. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling Europe. Mostly, her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. Her family remembers her as compassionate, independent, strong, and always placing her family's needs before her own. Anyone who had the chance to meet her knew how loving and caring she was just by seeing her warm smile. Mrs. Parkman is survived by her children, William E. Parkman of Swanzey, Karen N. Ruffen, and husband, Thomas of Salem and Thomas A. Parkman, and wife, Lisa of Brimfield, Mass.; grandchildren, Samantha Parkman, Michaela Carol Parkman, William J. Parkman and Trevor Ruffen; brothers, Rev. Donald W. Hayn, and wife Margaret, of Whitehall, Pa. and Russell J. Hayn of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Gretchen Hayn of Norfolk, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.
