Carroll "Cal" Kane

PITTSFIELD Carroll Francis "Cal" Kane died at his home on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014 at the age of 91. Born on July 4, 1923 in Alliance, Neb. he was the oldest child of John Henry Kane and Ruth V. L'Esperance Kane. He served in the 12th Armored Division with the US Army during World War II, during which he received two Purple Hearts including one for a serious wound received during the Battle of Herrlisheim. After the war he received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wyoming, and in 1949 he began a long career with General Electric from which he retired in 1988 as lead engineer designing fire control systems for Polaris, Poseidon, and Trident missiles. Always active in community service, after retiring, Cal became a fixture at local events, particularly through his participation as President and board member of the Civitan Club of Pittsfield. Almost every weekend Cal could be found working at pancake breakfasts, fundraising drives, the Special Olympics, or preparing holiday dining for the elderly or monthly meals for the disadvantaged. In addition to his work with Civitan Club, Cal served on the board of Pittsfield Community Television, repeatedly served as Region 1 chairman of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and was active in the 12th Armored Division Association. A longtime congregant, lector, and Sunday School teacher at St. Mary's and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Churches, he was most recently a congregant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and a member of the Holy Name Society. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rita; his daughter and son-in-law, Angela and John Burke of Westfield, Mass.; his son and daughter-in-law, John and Dorothy Kane of Brookeville, Md.; his grandchildren, Sam and Sara Burke, and Rachel, Grace, and David Kane; his siblings, Margaret Stenberg of Minot, N.D., and Richard Kane of Northborough, Mass.; and his sister-in-law, Jean Conforti of Pittsfield. He was pre-deceased by another sister, Helen Kane. FUNERAL NOTICE: The family will receive friends from 4 - 7 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield. The funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m., at St. Joseph's Church on North Street in Pittsfield. Burial will be private at a later date.
