1919 - 2014 PITTSFIELD Charles Bruno Monterosso, 95, of Springside Ave., died peacefully from congestive heart failure at BMC on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014, surrounded in love by his family. Charles was born in Pittsfield on Jan. 7, 1919, the seventh and youngest child of Joseph and Carmella Teti Monterosso. Charles was nine when his mother died. He graduated from Pittsfield High School and served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He married his wife, Gilda DiNicola Monterosso in 1948. Charles worked for GE for 40 years in Naval Ordnance. The Monterosso's were lifelong members of Mt. Carmel Church. Charlie, as he was known to everyone, loved the water and spent many joyful days swimming across his beloved Onota Lake and continued to swim well into his eighties. He loved playing and watching basketball, especially his NY Knicks. He loved playing pitch with his friends and trying his luck at Keno. After retirement, he would love to sit and talk with his buddies at Dunkin Donuts having his nightly coffee. He loved to watch his grandchildren play sports and did not miss any one of their games. Charlie loved to fix things and was an excellent carpenter who made beautiful furniture. He loved NYC where he and Gilda had many wonderful times there seeing all the great plays and musicals of their time. He also loved Frank Sinatra and had dinner at Franks mothers' house in Hoboken once. Most of all, Charlie was a kind, gentle and friendly man who loved his family and friends deeply. Charles leaves his beloved wife of 66 years, Gilda DiNicola Monterosso, his children; Michael Herrick and wife, Mary, Christina Cuddihy and husband, Paul, Marcia Gregg and husband, Russell. He cherished his grandchildren; Jason Cuddihy, Sarah Cuddihy, Christina Gregg, William Gregg, Michael Herrick Jr., Christopher Herrick, Matthew Herrick, Lisa Lovell and Elizabeth Herrick. Uncle Charlie was like a second father to his sister-in-law, Diane Harris, and niece, Deborah Bianchi. He also leaves great-grandchildren, Alicia, Gina, Adriana, Dominic and Robert. Other beloved family inlcude nephews, Peter Passafaro and Brian Harris, nieces, Carmellina Discoe, Carmen Walsh, Rosemary Lahart, Rita Crocker, Gail Monterosso, and brother-in-law, Carlo DiNicola and wife, Dianne and their children, Daniel, Linda, Lori and Tammy. Charles was predeceased by his five brothers; Carmen, Frank, Samuel, Joseph and James and a sister, Carmella Passafaro. Charlie was well loved and will be deeply missed! FUNERAL NOTICE: Services will take place Friday, Oct. 24, 2014 at 9:15 a.m. from the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 414 North St., Pittsfield with the Rev. Geoffrey J. Deeker C.S.S. officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014 from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in care of the funeral home.
