1927 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
WILLIAMSTOWN - The Hon. Charles R. Alberti Jr. of North Hemlock Lane, a retired Superior Court judge, died on Thursday at North Adams Regional Hospital. He was 84.
Following his retirement from the bench in August 1992, Judge Alberti maintained a busy work schedule as a professional mediator and as primary interviewer for the Williams College Oral History Project, which he joined in 1996. Throughout his life, he pursued a wide variety of interests including cooking, architecture, and American history, particularly the Civil War. He also enjoyed studying his Italian heritage and he took quiet pride in the accomplishments of his ancestors and his children and grandchildren.
Charles Rosario Alberti Jr. was born June 15, 1927, in Pittsfield, son of Charles R. Alberti and Lucia Cavallaro Alberti. His father served as district attorney and as a judge. After graduating from Pittsfield High School and Deerfield Academy, he joined the U.S. Navy for service in World War II; after the war he entered the Air Force Reserve. Following his graduation from Williams College in 1950, he studied law at Columbia University and married Mary Angela Gualtieri of Rome, N.Y., on July 12, 1952. "Nan" Alberti died on May 15, 2009.
Having received his law degree, Judge Alberti and his wife moved to Pittsfield, where he continued his father's law practice until the early 1960s when the family moved to Lenox, where Judge Alberti had established a law office. For many years, he served as Lenox town counsel and in 1972 was appointed a Special Justice of the Southern Berkshire District Court, hearing cases in Lee on a part-time basis. In 1974, he was appointed presiding justice of the Southern Berkshire District Court, where he served until his appointment to the Superior Court in 1976.
Judge Alberti leaves his son, Charles Christopher Alberti of Beijing, China, his wife Susan Stark Alberti and their son Samuel Alberti; two daughters, Lisa Alberti of New York, N.Y., and her son Carlos Alberti, and Sara Alberti of Rumford, R.I., and her daughter, Jennifer Alberti-Silverstein and her father Richard Silverstein; a brother-in-law, John Gualtieri of South Carolina, and his wife, Maureen, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be Tuesday, May 1, at 4:30 at St. John's Episcopal Church, Park Street, Williamstown. Burial will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Flynn-Dagnoli -Montagna Home for Funerals West Chapel, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247.
