Cora Virginia "Jinny" Beattie Rawlings

1928 - 2014 SOUTH EGREMONT Cora Virginia Reed Beattie Rawlings "Jinny" passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family and friends on July 15, 2014. Born in Stamford, Conn., on Feb. 21, 1928, to Sidney and Cora Reed, she was educated at Sacred Heart Academy in Stamford, graduating in 1946. She moved to Sheffield in the late 1940's and helped her mother run the "Wide Acres Nursing Home" there. She met her husband, Frank E. Beattie, in Sheffield and they were married on April 14, 1951, in Great Barrington. She and Frank moved to South Egremont where their three children were born and raised. In 1959, Jinny graduated from the former Henry W. Bishop Memorial School of Nursing. She worked for many years as a charge nurse at the former Pines Nursing Home in Gt. Barrington. Jinny would often be seen gathering firewood from their land, weed whacking along the fence line and tending to their vegetable gardens, all of which she loved doing . Frank and Jinny also enjoyed travelling to Maine and Cape Cod. After the loss of her oldest son, Christopher in 1976, Jinny became a private duty nurse, caring for the elderly in their homes, a profession to which she was proudly dedicated for more than three decades. Her first husband, Frank, passed away July 31, 1997. In May of 2004, Jinny married Col. John "Jack" Rawlings of North Egremont and was blessed with an extended family and many new found friends. Jack and Cora enjoyed travelling to Colorado and WestPoint. Jack passed away in April of 2009. Jinny/Cora was continuously cared for in her last few years by her family, personal caregivers and friends. She took great pleasure in reading, crossword puzzles and the peacefulness and picturesque grand view from her screened-in porch! A devoted mother and wonderful nurse, Jinny was well respected and steadfast in her beliefs. She will be missed as she touched many hearts throughout her life. Jinny is survived by her daughter, Kimberley C. Hyatt (Beattie) and son-in-law, Keith of Sheffield; her son, Jonathan E. Beattie and daughter-in-law, Sheri Cousins of South Egremont and Kingfield, Maine; her stepson, Stephen H. Rawlings of North Egremont, and her best friend and caregiver Terrie Babcock of Lee. She also leaves her cousin, Marilyn Millholland of So. Lake Tahoe, her brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Patricia Beattie, her friend, Joseph T. Murphy of Glastonbury, Conn., and many other friends. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services will be private per Jinny's request. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in Jinny's memory to either The Henry W. Bishop Memorial School of Nursing Scholarship Fund or Egremont Free Library through the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main Street, Gt. Barrington, MA. 01230, which is making arrangements. Reflections and remembrances may be sent to the family through www.finnertyandstevens.com.
