Cortney S. Wheeler

1935 - 2014 WORTHINGTON Cortney S. Wheeler, 79, passed away at home with his loving wife, Elizabeth, and family by his side on Wednesday, July 2, 2014. Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 16, 1935, the son of Charles and Ina Culver Wheeler, he was a 1953 graduate of Dalton High School. Cortney was employed by the New York Central Railroad as a brakeman from 1953 to 1963, and then was employed as a cross country truck driver for Texon for 22 years spanning from 1963 until 1986. During this time, he was credited with driving 1,900,000 safe miles with no incidents. In 1986, he started working as an engineer for the Boston & Maine Railroad, until moving onto Amtrak as an engineer until his retirement in 2002. He served in the National Guard for 4 1/2 years, and was headquartered in Pittsfield. He was a Deputy Sheriff for Hampshire County. Cortney was a 58-year Master Mason with Globe Unity Lodge A.F. & A.M., in Dalton, where he served as Master for three terms and enjoyed helping with the various Masonic Programs. He was the recipient the Joseph Warren Distinguished Service Medal. He enjoyed camping, boating, hunting, fishing, skiing, snowmobiling and bowling. Cortney is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Ferry Wheeler. They were married July 5, 1954 and would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. The couple made their home in Worthington and their winter home in Charlotte Harbor, Fla. He is survived by his children, Cheryl A. Preston-Major and her husband, Ronald of Worthington, Sandra L. Cameron and her husband, Shawn of Washington, Dianne E. Sullivan and her husband Todd of North Port, Fla., Charles S. Wheeler II and his wife, Tanya of Westfield, Stuart A. Wheeler and his wife, Michelle of Bernardston; his grandchildren, Andrew, Elizabeth, Scott, Jessie, James, Steven, Danielle, Katelyn, Kenny, Corey, Haleigh, Garrett and Isabelle-Rose, great grandchildren Jillian, Zachary, Kasadie, Andrew, Marshall, and Christian, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Melissa; by sister Lynn Lesure, and by brother Ronald Wheeler. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service for Mr. Cortney S. Wheeler will be held Saturday, July 12, 2014, at 1 p.m. at BARTLETT WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Douglas Small, officiating. A Masonic Service will follow in the South Cemetery in Peru. Calling hours will be held Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
