D. Winifred Schmidt AMESBURY, MA D. Winifred (Perrett) Schmidt, 87, of Amesbury, formerly of Northborough and Pittsfield, died peacefully Friday afternoon, Feb. 10, 2012, at the Amesbury Village Nursing Home. She was the former wife of the late Stanley A. Schmidt. Born in Richmond, Va., she was the daughter of the late Elliott B. and Doris (Cook) Perrett. After graduating from Pittsfield high school, she worked in machine shops to support the war effort. After the war, she attended St. Margaret's School of Nursing. Prior to her marriage, Wini had worked for various nursery schools and daycare centers in the Boston area, as well as private childcare. After starting married life and a family in Lynn, they eventually settled in Northborough. As the family grew up, she worked at various jobs, most notably at Basketville and then O'Brien's 5 & 10. Even after retiring in 1993, Wini continued to help out at O'Brien's and spent many hours volunteering, visiting shut-ins, driving those without cars to appointments or to the store. In 2003, she was the Special Volunteer Award Recipient in recognition of her many hours cheerfully and freely given. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt who truly enjoyed all family gatherings. Her survivors include her daughter, Linda St. Marie and husband, Donald, of Amesbury; three sons, Jeffrey Schmidt and wife, Jay, of Aiea, HI; Kirk Schmidt of Lancaster, NH and Bert Schmidt of Deer Isle, ME; 10 grandchildren, Bryan St. Marie of Texas, Gwendolyn Foley and husband, Eric, of Bradford, Matthew St. Marie of Texas, Jocelyn St. Marie of Amesbury, Jessica Schmidt of Hawaii, Shauna, Shanoah, Jake, Kory and Alex Schmidt, all of Maine; two great-granddaughters, Leighia and Stella; a sister, Lois Prestrud of Seattle, WA; one brother, Elliott B. Perrett, Jr. and wife, Janice, of Frederick, MD, along with several generations of cousins, nieces and nephews. MEMORIAL NOTICE: Interment services at the Pittsfield Cemetery in Pittsfield will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family, and there will be no visiting hours. Donations in her memory may be made to the veteran's organization of the donor's choice. Condolences may be sent to Linda and Donald St. Marie, 37 Portsmouth Rd., Amesbury, MA 01913.
