David Hallson Colburn

1927 - 2016 David Hallson Colburn 89, passed away peacefully March 19,2016. David had resided at Springside Rehabilitation for the three years where he enjoyed the company of his nurse's and aides and fellow residents and families. David was born February 25, 1927 in Pittsfield to Alwyn D. and Winifred H. Colburn. David graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1944. After graduating he joined the U.S Navy, he was stationed in Kansas and Norfolk VA where he served as a trainer for the B 25 Belly Gunner. After serving David returned to Pittsfield where he met and married the love of his life, Priscilla A. Silvernail. They were married January 3, 1953. David had gained the reputation as the "Mosquito Man". He started working for Berkshire County Mosquito Control as a ditch digger and a summer hand. He was soon promoted to foreman, and on June 1, 1975 he was promoted to Superintendent. He stayed very active in the Mosquito Control arena, serving on several boards and in his retirement years served as a consultant leading seminars throughout the Northeast, and has award named after him for his service, The David H. Colburn award for outstanding service. David was a late bloomer, while working two jobs he managed to go to college and on May 31, 1975 he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Biology from North Adams State College of which he was immensely proud. David was an avid hunter and fisherman, and outdoorsman. David was a member of South Congregational Church where he was an integral part of the church. He served on several boards and committees and especially loved his role as Deacon. He took his responsibilities very seriously. He was known for his snappy bow ties and smile. David is survived by his 3 children, David Jr and wife Salena, and their two children Christopher and Amber from Tennessee, daughter Lyla-Jean Clapper and her husband Thomas, and son Andrew of Pittsfield, and his youngest daughter Deborah Brazie and her son Nathan of Tennessee. He is also survived by his great -granddaughters Arielle and Ashlynne Bull, Presley Mathes, and Everlett Welch Brazie and several much loved nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his wife Priscilla, brother Dann Colburn, sister Violet (Lyla) Shealy, nephew Richard (Dick) Colburn and granddaughter Lynn Brazie Bull. David's family would like to thank the staff of Springside for all the outstanding care they gave to David, he was made comfortable and enjoyed being part of the nurse's station and other residents. FUNERAL NOTICE- A memorial service for Mr. David H. Colburn will be held Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 2PM at South Congregational Church in Pittsfield with Rev. Joel Huntington pastor, officiating.
