David Southard Obituary
David P. Southard

1946-2016 David P. " Bear" Southard, age 69, of Pittsfield, died Sunday evening at the Hillcrest Commons where he had been a patient since last July. He was born in Pittsfield, June 13, 1946, the son of the late Peter G. and Eleanor Dimanche Southard. He attended the local schools and graduated from the former North Junior High School. Continuing his education, he was a three star athlete at Pittsfield High School. A defensive end for the football team, he also played fullback on offense. Bear also played basketball throughout his four years and continues to this day to hold the PHS shot put record as a great Track and Field star. He competed against cross town rival, St. Joseph's High School and against one of its star athletes, Frank Scago. Both raised in the same neighborhood, the two were the best of friends coming and going to games including walking to the respective sporting venue that evening. However, the two also were the fiercest of competitors during the game, but all was forgotten on the way home following the game. A huge fan of the Red Sox, Celtics and all the local sports teams. He cherished the Baltimore Colts, and would remind you, he had been since a fan since 1956. He remained a fan even following their move to Indianapolis. Yet, his greatest enjoyment became following his children's athletic accomplishments. He is survived by his wife, the former " Millie " C. Rodgers , with whom he would have celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary this coming Sept. 23rd . He is also survived by his son, Shaun D. Southard and his wife, Carolyn and their daughter, Emily, of Raleigh, N.C., his two daughters, Kelly C. Southard of Chicago, Ill. and Lisa M. Southard and her daughter, Payton, who together with Emily, lovingly referred to him as their , " Pop Pops". He is also survived by his brother, Peter G. Southard, Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Pittsfield and their daughter, Ashley, his sister, Joanne Bennett of Pittsfield, his aunt, Nancy Prezenik, and his nieces and nephews.
