Diana Frances Piatkowski Harwood

1939 2013 Diana Frances Piatkowski Harwood, a lifelong resident of Great Barrington, MA passed peacefully at her home on Tuesday, November 26th, 2013. Her life was fulfilled with time spent with her family, volunteer work and a profound and life-long passion for floral design, gardening and amazing cooking that many have enjoyed. Born in Brooklyn, NY on June 10, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Henry S. Piatkowski and Helen Sadlowski Piatkowski Tawczynski (Taft). Diana moved to Great Barrington in 1942 and attended the local schools. Diana graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1961 with a B.S. degree in Home Economics, Child Growth and Development; an A.A.S. Legal Assistant degree in 1982 from the Junior College of Albany, New York; as well as a B.S. degree in Hotel, Restaurant, Travel Administration from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1987. During her life, she participated in many different vocations including owning her own catering business and seafood market. She was a certified nurses assistant and a home health aide, paralegal, and she held various food service certifications. Most recently, she was employed at the Red Lion Inn Gift Shop in Stockbridge, MA for 14 years as a retail sales associate, where she enjoyed meeting global travelers and locals alike. She previously worked at the Southern Berkshire Chamber of Commerce for eight years in Great Barrington as an Administrative Assistant. She also spent 15 years working at the American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) in Great Barrington as the Steward for the main household. She was the bookstore manager at Berkshire Country Day School in Lenox, MA for two years as well. Diana will be remembered for her tireless dedication to the Great Barrington Garden Club of which she was a member for 42 years. She served in many different positions, including President for six years and was well known for her support of local events and volunteer activities including fundraising, civic activities, recycling and flower design. As a member of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc., she served as the Berkshire District Director for two terms and was the 1996 State Garden Tour/State Advertising Chairman. She was also more recently involved with the Thursday Morning Club in Great Barrington. She leaves her husband, William F. Harwood, to whom she had been married for 52 years. Besides her husband, she leaves two daughters, Heidi A. Little of Moncks Corner, SC, Holly C. and her husband Dean Ellerton of North Andover, MA and one son, W. Scott and his wife Karyn Harwood of Weston, CT and their families. She also leaves a brother, Daniel Tawczynski of Great Barrington, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by another brother, Stanley Piatkowski. FUNERAL NOTICE: The family will honor her wishes with a service on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 10:30 am at St Paul's Episcopal Church in Stockbridge, MA, with a reception to follow at AIER. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in her name to Hospice Care in the Berkshires, , Porchlight VNA, Thursday Morning Club or an organization close to your heart.
