1925 - 2012 LEE Donald Hubert Abbott, 87, of Greylock Street in Lee, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 29, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Springfield on July 14, 1925, and was raised and educated at Brightside Orphanage in Holyoke. At the age of 14, he moved to Mill River and worked on Mansir's farm until he joined the Army at age 21, serving in the Korean War. After the service, he returned to Springfield and married his longtime friend, Jacqueline Chauvin. In 1954 they moved to Lee, where he worked at High Lawn Farm. He was a hard worker and often held several jobs. e worked on the construction of the Mass Pike and Shadowbrook. He lost his leg in an industrial accident at Lee Lime in 1964. He founded Don's Taxi in 1965, which is currently run by his children as Abbott's Limousine and Livery Service, Inc.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Lee and an adorer at St. Mary's Oratory. He enjoyed bingo, fishing, watching the Red Sox and Patriots and riding around Lee in his old Caddy. He will always be known for his classic one-liners that we will continue to use forever. Like "love ya anyway!"
Besides his wife, Jacqueline Chauvin Abbott, he is survived by one son, Paul Abbott, and his wife Laura; five daughters, Donna Abbott with whom with he made his home, Kathleen Frieri and her husband Leon, Margaret Abbott and her partner Mike Kelly of Florida, Maryellen Walsh and her husband Michael, Rebecca Dean and her husband Scott; seven grandchildren, Jessica Sexton and her husband Sean, Rebecca and Nicholas Frieri, Renee Abbott, Ethan Dean and Adam and Brendan Walsh; three great-grandchildren, Stephen and Brandon Davis and Shyla Sexton; one brother-in-law, Daniel Chauvin of Arizona, and one sister-in-law, Susan Chauvin of Florida; also, several beloved nieces and nephews and his loyal dog Frances.
He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Robert Chauvin, in December 2011 and his mother-in-law, Germain Chauvin, in March of this year.
FUNERAL SERVICE: Funeral services for Donald H. Abbott will be on Thursday at 10:15 AM from the Kelly Funeral Home, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 AM at St. Mary's Church in Lee. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday evening from 4-7 PM at the funeral home.
