1930 - 2013 ADAMS Donald Charles Blanchette, 82, of 1 Berkshire Square died Sunday, February 3, 2013, at the Williamstown Commons Care Center.
Born in New York City on July 10, 1930, son of the late Rene and Mary Donovan Blanchette, he came to Adams as a child with his parents, attended Adams schools and graduated from the former Adams High School with the class of 1949. Mr. Blanchette was employed with the General Electric Co. in Pittsfield for a short time and was attending classes at the former North Adams State College where he received his Bachelor's Degree in education, after which he taught at the former Freeman School in North Adams, and the C.T. Plunket School in Adams. After working on and receiving his Master's degree in education he became employed in 1968 with the Charles H. McCann Vocational Technical High School in North Adams with the position of Director of Special Education, retiring in 1993. He was a Navy veteran.
Mr. Blanchette was a communicant of the Parish of Pope John Paul the Great in Adams, was a former member of the Adams Planning Board, a member of the Mt. Greylock Tower Association, was an avid golfer and a member of the Forest Park Country Club in Adams, was also an avid reader and was considered a student of life.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Barbara Ann Exford, whom he married on September 8, 1951; two daughters, Sue Timoneda and her husband Genaro of Chicopee, and Barbara Martel of North Adams; two sons, David D. Blanchette and his wife Darlene of Clarksburg, Stephen D. Blanchette and his wife Connie of Apopka, FL.; two sisters, Joan Tompkins and her husband Charles of Clarksburg, and Rita Fontana of Lee; three grandchildren, Stephen, Jason, and Sara Blanchette; two sisters-in-law, Sister Doris Exford of the Sisters of Providence in Holyoke and Sandy Bissaillon and her husband Joe of North Adams, and a niece, Marilyn Fontana.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Service for Donald Charles Blanchette will take place Wednesday, February 6, at 12 PM from the TROTTIER PRINGLE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Summer St., Adams, with the Rev. Gregory LaFreniere, Deacon of the Parish of Pope John Paul the Great, officiating, Burial will be at a later date at the convenience of the family. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday from 10 AM until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Charles H. McCann Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
