Donald Gangemi

1939-2013 GREAT BARRINGTON Donald Gangemi, 74, of Seekonk Cross Road, Great Barrington, died Sunday, September 1st at Berkshire Medical Center after a valiant struggle with myelodysplastic syndrome. Born on July 27, 1939, he was the son of Clara and Rosario Gangemi of Long Island City, NY. The strength of Italian family values guided his life; nothing was more important than the welfare of his family. He graduated from Newtown High School, Elmhurst, NY with a concentration in mechanical drafting. After a stint in the Army Reserves, Armored Cavalry Division, he continued his studies in mechanical engineering at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. After a long career as a senior engineer with GL&V, Inc. (formerly Beloit Lenox), consulting for them at paper mills throughout the world and securing numerous patents for his innovative designs, he retired in 2004, and filled his days pursuing his many interests. Apart from his family, Don's great loves were photography and music. He began studying the violin at the age of four and continued studying and playing his entire life, when not diverted by the drums, guitar, mandolin, or banjo. His musical taste was eclectic, ranging from Bach to folk to the Celtic and country traditional tunes of the British Isles. He was a past president of the Berkshire County Country Music and Dance Society and enjoyed playing for various events with his fellow musicians from the Great Barrington Rudolph Steiner School. He is survived by his partner and wife of thirty years, Deborah Gangemi, of Great Barrington, his daughter and son-in-law, Zoë and Robert Barracano, of Burlington, VT, his granddaughters, Lula and Maya Barracano, his sister Marie Gangemi of Long Island City, NY., and his brother and sister-in-law Robert and Kathleen Gangemi of Newburgh, NY, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Don lived life fully from the very beginning, when he surprised his parents by being born with two teeth, to his last day, laughing with his family over pie. He was an amazing story teller and told them wherever he went. He was fiercely protective of his loved ones, brilliant and creative, and worked twice as hard as those around him even as his health began to fail. FUNERAL NOTICE: A gathering to celebrate Don's life will be held at his beloved home on Sunday September 15th from noon to 3:00 pm. Everyone is invited to stop by and share in music, food, and stories, in remembrance of a man who loved all three, but loved the company of family and friends even more. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Squad or the South Berkshire Concert Series at Simon's Rock in care of FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230, who is caring for the arrangements. Remembrances may be sent to the family through www.finnertyandstevens.com
