Donald Joseph "Sonny" Gates 1936-2012 PITTSFIELD Donald Joseph "Sonny" Gates, 75, of 5 Dogwood Lane, Pittsfield, died Thursday, February 2, 2012, at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Hoosic Falls, N.Y., on October 7, 1936, a son of Frederick and Helen Brennan Gates, he was educated in Pittsfield schools. He had served in the United States Army Reserves. Mr. Gates was employed by General Electric Company for 25 years, working as a welder and as a truck driver there, retiring in 1991. From 1992 until 2000, he worked as a school bus driver for the Central Berkshire Regional School District. He was a member of the General Electric Quarter Century and Pensioners Clubs. He enjoyed target shooting and fishing, as well as wrestling and UFC. He loved his dog. Mr. Gates leaves his wife, the former Elaine Corbett, whom he married October 16, 1965. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Jesse J. Gates, Sr., and his companion, Sadi Wittig, of Pittsfield; three daughters, Deborah L. Sullivan of Pittsfield, Penny Gates and her significant other, Daniel Myers of Pittsfield, Tammy L. Gates and her husband, Joseph Jean, of Columbia, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Austin Nunn and his significant other, Alicia Provencher, Ashley Munn, Brianna Gates, and Jesse Gates, Jr., and a great granddaughter, Lillianah Nunn. He also leaves his beloved dog, "Patches". He was pre-deceased by two brothers, Gordon Gates and Michael Gates. FUNERAL NOTICE: At Sonny's request, there are no services or calling hours. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Gates may be made to Berkshire Medical Center Intensive Care Unit in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
