Donald Stanley Phelps

1926 - 2013 CHESHIRE Donald Stanley Phelps, 87, of 74 Furnace Hill, died Sunday, June 30, 2013, at North Adams Regional Hospital.

Mr. Phelps had been a resident of Cheshire since 1960. He and his wife wintered in Lakeland, Fla., for 23 years.

Born in North Adams on May 30, 1926, the son of Arthur S. and Eva V. Ashton Phelps, he was a 1944 graduate of Drury High School.

A World War II veteran, he enlisted with the United States Navy on Aug. 17, 1944, served as a Seaman First Class, stationed in Great Lakes, Ill., and Norfolk, Va., and was honorably discharged on July 19, 1946.

Mr. Phelps was employed by General Electric Company where he was a Unit Manager in the Power Transformer Department. He retired in December 1985 with 40 years service.

He was a member of the G.E. Quarter Century Club.

Mr. Phelps was a member of the First Baptist Church in North Adams and a member of the Upton Lodge of Masons in Cheshire. He had served as a Deacon at the Cheshire Baptist Church.

Active in the town as well, Mr. Phelps was a member of Fire Department, the Advisory Board and Finance Committee. He also coached Little League. He was a Red Sox fan. He enjoyed life.

Mr. Phelps leaves his wife, the former Mildred "Millee" A. Stiles, whom he married March 12, 1949, in Morningside Baptist Church in Pittsfield.

He is also survived by a son, David S. Phelps of Adams; two daughters, Paula J. Paradise and her husband, Foster, of Adams, and Judy L. Lyons of Cheshire; a sister, Bette Dougherty of Long Island, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Heather and Simon Edwards of Agawam, Christy and Mike Meagher of Agawam, Sgt. Bryce and Blair Lyons of Fort Drum, N. Y., and Carly and Corinne Lyons of Cheshire; six adored great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Reimer, and by a son-in-law, Michael Lyons.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Donald Stanley Phelps will be Friday, July 5, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in North Adams with the Rev. David A. Anderson, pastor, officiating. Burial, with military honors will be held at a later date at Southview Cemetery in North Adams. There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department or to Northern Berkshire Hospice Association, both in care of DERY-CHESHIRE FUNERAL HOME, P.O. Box 445, Cheshire, MA 01225.
