Donald Goodhue Shedd
Donald Goodhue Shedd, born July 16, 1926 in Pittsfield, the son of Harry P. and Myra F. Goodhue Shedd, died December 22, 2012 in an automobile accident in Promised Land, Penn. He was a lifelong resident of Pittsfield and spent the winters in Largo, Florida.
He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1944. He enlisted in U.S.
in June 1944 and became a combat infantryman with the 42nd "Rainbow" Division at the "Battle of the Bulge" in Alsace, France. His First Battalion of the 242nd Regiment was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation during this battle. He was awarded two
for action in Furth and Seebruck, Germany; three Battle Stars (Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland, Central Europe); Combat Infantry Badge. Other less important medals: European-African-Middle Eastern Medal; Victory Medal; Occupation Medal; Good Conduct Medal. After war was over, was in Army of Occupation in Austria Selected to attend Rainbow University at Zell am See, Austria. He was discharged from the Army in June 1946. He attended Berkshire Business College.
Donald married Phyllis M. Derosia, July 5, 1947.
He is survived by three children, Darrell D. Shedd (of Worthington, Mass.) Stephen K. Shedd (of Chesterfield, Mo.) and Kimberly D. Larravide (of Rockville, Md.); five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren
He was employed by Shedd Plumbing & Heating business in 1946 and became a Journeyman and a Master plumber. The firm was established in 1893 by his grandfather William H. Shedd, then his father, Harry P. Shedd took over, then Donald, now his son, Darrell runs it.
Donald was affiliated with: First Church of Christ, Scientist (former President of Board) Mother Church, Boston, Mass., Mystic Lodge of Masons (50 years) Royal Arch Chapter, Salvation Army Advisory Board since 1955. Was Chairman of Building Committee for new Corps Headquarters Building in Pittsfield, 1968 to 1969. Given the "Others Award". Master Plumbers Association of Central Berkshire (former President), Berkshire Museum Camera Club, Suncoast Camera Club (Largo, Fla.), Friend Of Tanglewood, Massachusetts Audubon Society, and 42nd "Rainbow" Division Veterans.
His family was the most important thing in his life.
Donald's hobbies included photography, love of animals, pencil and ink sketching, opera and classical music lover, wood carving, bicycle riding, bowling, downhill and cross country skiing where he belonged to Mt. Greylock Ski club.
A memorial service will be held in the near future.
