Dorothy Aumann Obituary

Dorothy Lindgren Aumann 1919-2011 LENOX Dorothy Lindgren Aumann, 91, of Caldwell, N.J., passed away on Sunday at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox, surrounded by her loving daughters. She was born as Anna Dorothea on November 5, 1919 in Grassflat, a small coal mining town in Western Pennsylvania, the daughter of Swedish immigrants Andrew O. and Anna Cornelia Danielson Lindgren. Her family relocated to New Jersey in 1928 and in 1936 she graduated from Grover Cleveland High School where she excelled in sports. Upon graduation Dorothy entered Presbyterian Nursing School and graduated in 1941 as an RN. She joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps as a Lieutenant and served in the Pacific during World War II. She was stationed at the Naval Hospital in Guam during the war and received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1952. After serving her country Dorothy went on to raise five children and work at Mountainside Hospital in Glen Ridge, N.J. as an OR nurse. She loved her work; retiring in 1992. In 2008 she left her home of 80 years and moved to the Berkshires to be near her daughter, Jean. On Memorial Day, 2010, Dorothy donned her Navy uniform and joined in with the other Veterans in the Lenox Parade. Dorothy is survived by three daughters; Jean Aumann of Lee, and Karen and Laura Aumann, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; as well as many nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by a daughter, Louise Ann Aumann in 1979, and son, John Edward Aumann in 2000. Her family is grateful to the staff at Kimball Farms Nursing Center whose gave her so much love and support. The staff there genuinely loved and cared about her. Thank you. A graveside service with military honors will be held at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Caldwell, a celebration of her life is planned for later this spring in her hometown.
