1931 - 2014 DALTON Edna A. VanValkenburg, 83, of 78 Dalton Division Road, a 60-year resident of Dalton, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014, at her home. Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 5, 1931, the daughter of Anthony and Stella Smegal Kowalczyk, she was educated in Pittsfield schools and was a 1949 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Mrs. VanValkenburg had been a buyer at the former England Brothers department store where she worked for 20 years and then went to work at the former Steiger's department store where she worked two years. She retired in 1983. Mrs. VanValkenburg was a communicant of St. Agnes Church where she had, at one time, taught CCD. She enjoyed sewing and cooking, square dancing, and spending time with her grandchildren and visiting Disney World. Mrs. VanValkenburg leaves her husband, Albert R. VanValkenburg, whom she married May 6, 1950, in Holy Family Church. She is also survived by a daughter, Bonnie VanValkenburg Clark, of Dalton; two brothers, Joseph Kowalczyk of Pittsfield and Richard Kowalczyk and his wife, Roberta, of Pittsfield; three grandchildren, Anthony M. Strout and his wife, Orly, Dustin D. Clark, and Elise M. Clark, two great grandchildren, Benjamin Strout and Julia Strout; and her son-in-law, Gary Strout, of Lenox. She was predeceased by a daughter, Donna VanValkenburg Strout, and a brother, William A. Kowalczyk. FUNERAL NOTICE: At Edna's request there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare in The Berkshires in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
