1925 - 2013 PITTSFIELD Edward Francis Barrett, Sr., 88, of 140 Melbourne Road, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on March 14, 2013.
Edward Francis was born in Holyoke on Feb. 8, 1925, son of James E. Barrett and Mary E. Foley Barrett. He grew up in Holyoke, attended local schools and University of Ottawa.
He joined the Navy in August 1943 until March of 1948 and served during World War II on the USS Suisun and the USS St. George. He received the WWII Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal (2 stars), and Philippine Liberation Medal (1 star) and achieved the rank of Aviation Ordnanceman, Third Class Petty Officer. Attached to the USS Suisun, he was a member of the first Combat unit to enter Tokyo Bay during the emergency Naval Occupation of Japan.
He later enlisted in the Air Force and served from 1948 to 1954 during the Korean War, achieving the rank of Technical Sergeant. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Edward also received a Diploma as a Welfare Specialist and served as Assistant to the Chaplain at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas.
He worked at the Hampden Brewery in Holyoke before moving to Pittsfield in 1961 to work at Petricca Industries as their controller. In 1970, he was self-employed as a public accountant retiring in early 1990.
Edward was a member of the Holyoke Chapter of the Knights of Columbus. He was a communicant of St. Mark and St. Joseph churches in Pittsfield where he was involved in the Parish Council, Catholic Charities, Confirmation CCD, Eucharistic Ministry and served the parishes in many other capacities. He was involved with the Sierra Club, Downey Side and the Marion Helpers in Stockbridge.
Edward enjoyed golfing, bowling and being surrounded by his large, loving family.
His loving wife, Joan Arlene Ramsey Barrett, whom he married Feb. 14, 1953, at St. Patrick's Church in Fort Worth, passed away May 23, 2008.
He leaves his loving children Mary Sukiennik, and her husband, David of Pittsfield, Louise Panning, and her husband, Garry of Penfield, N.Y., Joan Brennan, and her husband, Mark of Pittsfield, Rose Mazzeo, and her husband, Ronald of Pittsfield, Edward Barrett, Jr., and his wife, MaryJo of Hinsdale, Theresa Barrett of Pittsfield, Cecilia Stevens, and her husband, Scott of Valatie, N.Y., and Maurice Barrett, and his wife, Michelle of Chamberlain, S.D. He also leaves 27 grandchildren, Gregory, Michael, Justin, Margaret, Laura, James, Katherine, Mark, Katherine, Patrick, Sarah, John, Matthew, Maryrose, Rebecca, Benjamin, Erin, MaryKate, Michael, Thomas, Ashley, Shaunna, Jessica, Danielle, David, Andrew, and Emily, and 24 great-grandchildren, Sofia, Stewart, Gilbert, Adaline, Molly, John Henry, Ryan, Mark, Alexis, Mallory, Blake, Isabella, Lukas, Zachary, Tyler, Andrew, Curtis, Mark, Rico, Raina, Trinity, Lana, Noelle and Aaden, and by his sister, Margaret Martin, of Holyoke.
He was predeceased by his brothers, James Barrett, Maurice Barrett, and John Barrett; by his sisters, Katherine Moriarty, Mary Barrett and Helen Loughrey, and by one great-grandson, Liam Barrett Sakowski.
The family would like to give special thanks to Melbourne Place and to Hospice Care of the Berkshires for the wonderful care of their father.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Edward F. Barrett, Sr. of Pittsfield who died March 14, 2013, will be held Thursday at 8:15 a.m. from the DERY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, celebrated by the Rev. Monsignor Michael Shershanovich, pastor. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Dery Funeral Home.
