Edward F. New Jr.

1927 - 2014 STOCKBRIDGE Edward F. New Jr., 86, of Cherry Street passed away peacefully at Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility, at Laurel Lake, on April 16, 2014. He was born in Great Barrington, on October 5, 1927; the son of Edward F. New, Sr. and Johanna (Georgis) New. In his youth, he was adored by his aunts and uncles and they nicknamed him "Little Noonie". That moniker stuck with him throughout his life as friends, family, nieces, nephews, and grandkids fondly remember him as Noonie, Uncle Noonie, or Grandpa Noonie. He was known as a very good catcher on the baseball field and also taught himself the fiddle, which he played in a country band. He graduated from the former Searles High School in Great Barrington and upon graduation enlisted in the Navy. He was honorably discharged and moved to California to work residential construction with his uncles. He returned to the Berkshires and married the former Helen P. Cordes on May 14, 1949 at St. Joseph's Church in Stockbridge. Helen passed away April 12, 2003. He began his 30 year career driving tractor-trailer trucks for local trucking companies, B&P Trucking and Old Colony Trucking based in Lee. Following his career as a truck driver, he was employed as the Maintenance Supervisor at Monument Mountain Regional High School, retiring in 1989. He was a communicant of St. Mary, Mother of the Church, in Lee and St. Joseph's Church, in Stockbridge. He enjoyed spending time working in and around the family house. He was very meticulous and liked to make sure everything was "just so". There were many birthday, first communion, confirmation, Labor Day, 4th of July, Memorial Day, and graduation parties enjoyed by many at the family home. He and his wife would often take "weekenders" with their friends, Sally and the late Paul Miner, to places in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. There were also family trips to Hammonasset Beach and Cape Cod. He is survived by three sons, Edward F. New, III of Milford, Mass., Eugene M. New of Ludlow, Mass., and William J. New and his wife Paula, of Pittsfield; two daughters, Patricia A. New of Springfield, Mass., and Christine M. Castellon and her husband Jack of Neshanic Station, N.J.; six grand-children, Richard, Kari, Nicole, Samantha, William Jr., and Robert New.
