Edwin A. Stevens Jr.

1941 - 2016 PITTSFIELD- Edwin "Ed" A. Stevens Jr., 74, of Appleton Ave., passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at Berkshire Medical Center, surrounded by his family following a brief illness. He was born in Pittsfield on July 11, 1941, the son of the late Gwendolyn G. Sykes and Edwin A. Stevens Sr. During his youth, he worked at the Frothlingham Estate as a gardener and spent some summers working at the former Schweitzer's in Lee. He was a 1960 graduate of Pittsfield High School, and in 1964 he received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the former North Adams State College. Ed began his 33-year teaching career at Pittsfield High School, but transferred to Taconic High School in Pittsfield when it opened in 1969. During his tenure there, he taught English and History. During summer breaks from school, he worked at both October Mountain and Pittsfield State Forests, and raised raspberries for many years-which were sold to local resorts and fine restaurants in Berkshire County. Following his retirement from the School Department in 1996, he worked as an Attendant at a gas station on the Massachusetts Turnpike for 9 years, and drove limousines for Abbot's Transportation in Lee. Ed enjoyed hunting, gardening, reading about History, and CB radios. He, his family, and his parents usually spent several weeks in the summer either travelling throughout the U.S and Canada,. or spending time at the family's favorite locations in York Beach, Maine. He is survived by his wife the former Beverly J. Leno, whom he married on July 12, 1963. They would have celebrated their 53rd anniversary this year. He also leaves daughters Michele M. Stevens of Montana, Candace Baker and her significant other Ken Lake of Pittsfield, TamiSue Stevens-Goerlach and her husband Gregg Goerlach, of Pittsfield, 4 grandchildren: Lance Madewell and his wife Jennifer of Pittsfield, Allen Baker and his wife Samantha of Greenfield, MA, Brittany Madewell of Pittsfield and Billy D. Madewell IV of Pittsfield. He also is survived by a great-grandchild Erik, Brittany's son. He also leaves a brother: Robert L. Stevens Sr. and his wife Ann Newman Stevens of Pittsfield, and his beloved Aunts: Betty Sykes Loehr and Madeline Sykes Noble, both of Pittsfield. He also leaves several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, grandparents, several Uncles, his in-laws: Leighton E. Leno, Sr. and Glenna M. Martin Leno, and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Ed and Nancy Hunt Leno. FUNERAL NOTICE: A graveside service for Mr. Edwin A. Stevens Jr., will be held Monday, June 6 at 11 AM at the Pittsfield Cemetery. Friends are asked to meet inside the cemetery gates at 10:45 AM. Per Ed's request, there will be no funeral.
