Eleanor Penfield Spencer 1927 - 2011 LENOX Eleanor Baldwin Penfield "Penny" Spencer, 84, of Devonshire Estates in Lenox died Dec. 22, 2011, peacefully at home after a short illness. She was born in Detroit, Mich., on May 2, 1927, daughter of Paul Livingstone Penfield and Charlotte Gilman Penfield of Birmingham, Mich. She studied at the Westtown School in Westtown, Pa., and was a graduate of Connecticut College for Women in New London, Conn., and earned a master's degree in mathematics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich. Primarily a homemaker, she was also active in the community of Williamstown, where she and her husband lived for almost 50 years and raised their four children. Her activities there included teaching Sunday School at St. John's Episcopal Church, volunteer work at the Williamstown Elementary School Library, active membership in the League of Women Voters, and volunteer work at the Wild Oats Co-Op. She enjoyed music and sang in the church choir, and in the Heptones ladies barbershop group. She also enjoyed playing bridge and solving puzzles such as sudoku puzzles. During summer months she much enjoyed activities with extended family at the Penfield Cottage on Lake George in Silver Bay, NY. She also very much enjoyed blueberry harvesting time at their farm in Brooksville, Maine. She leaves her husband, Guilford Lawson Spencer, II, whom she married December 22, 1951. Besides her husband, she leaves four children, a son, Guilford Lawson Spencer, III, [and his wife, Susan Harper] of North Hampton, NH, and their two children, Guilford Lawson Spencer, IV and Kiernan F. Spencer; a son, William Paul Spencer, [and his wife Susan Potter] of Weston, and their three children, Matthew P. [and his wife Jocelyn B.] Gardner Spencer, Anna E. Spencer, and Jonathan D. Spencer; a daughter, Martha Martin Spencer of Dorchester; and a daughter, Elizabeth Gardner Spencer Moeller Piazza [and her husband Joe] of Rocky River, Ohio, and her four children, Kevin S. Moeller, Miriam S. Moeller, Christopher S. Moeller, and Rachel S. Moeller. She also leaves a sister, Martha Penfield Brown [and her husband D. Tyner Brown] of Virginia Beach, Va., and a brother, Paul L. Penfield, Jr. [and his wife Barbara B. Penfield] of Weston. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service for Eleanor Penfield Spencer will be held at 2 pm Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown, MA.
