Eleanor Tarnawa

1932 - 2013 HOUSATONIC Eleanor Marie Tarnawa, 81, of Grove Street, died Friday, Dec. 20, at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Richmond on Sept. 16, 1932, daughter of Eugene and Nora Blake O'Brien. She attended local schools in Richmond, Housatonic, and the former Searles High School. She worked at the former Monument Mills, and then as a teacher's aide for the Berkshire Hills School District, retiring after many years. Eleanor was a communicant of the former All Saints Church. She was an avid Red Sox fan. Eleanor's husband, Stephen E. Tarnawa, whom she married June 2, 1951, predeceased her on May 30, 2009. She leaves two sons, Richard and his wife, Candice, of Belchertown, and William and his wife, Diane, of Richmond; one daughter, Debra "Debbie" and her husband, Alan Besaw of Housatonic; one brother, John O'Brien of Housatonic; two sisters, Edna Mead of Great Barrington, and Jean Davis of Stockbridge; her brother-in-law and special handyman, Sonny Tarnawa; five grandchildren, Jessica Besaw, Douglas Tarnawa, Elizabeth Tarnawa, Natasha Tarnawa, and Emily Tarnawa; a step-granddaughter, Joy Boyer; one great-granddaughter, Annabelle, several nieces and nephews and her dog, Izzie. Besides her husband Stephen, Eleanor was also predeceased by her son, Timothy; by grandson, Peter; by half-brother, William Winters, and four half-sisters, Nellie Thorpe, Ruth Warfield, Edith Moro and Bertha Moro. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Eleanor Marie Tarnawa, who died Dec. 20, will be held Monday, Dec. 23, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Church in Corpus Christi Parish, Housatonic, with the Rev. William P. Murphy, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Bridget's Cemetery. Family will receive friends at a calling hour preceding the funeral from 8:30 to 9:30 at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Eleanor's memory may be made to the Jimmy Fund in care of the funeral home at 33 South Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230.
