Eleanor Catherine VanOrden 1928-2012 PITTSFIELD Eleanor Catherine VanOrden, 83, of 89 Highland Avenue, Pittsfield, died Tuesday, February 7, 2012, at Berkshire Medical Center, following a short illness. Born in Dover, N.J., on May 18, 1928, the daughter of Stellos and Minnie "Winifred" Trowbridge Nas, she was educated in the Williamson Elementary School in Chester, N.J. She was a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Columbia Nursing Home in Columbia, N.J., for many years. Mrs. VanOrden attended the Adult Day Health Center on Bradford Street, where she was their longest participant, having attended 15 years. She enjoyed going out to breakfast and tag sales, as well as playing bingo and bingo scratch tickets. She had a love of animals and for her family and friends. Her husband, Joseph J. Van Orden, whom she married in 1965, died May 26, 1994. Mrs. VanOrden is survived by two daughters, Susan M. Smith, with whom she made her home, and JoAnn Preen of Dalton; a son, Raymond C. Smith and his wife, Karen, of Huntingdon, Pa.; a brother, George Nas of Orrtanna, Pa.; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great grandson; as well as her cat, Maya. She was pre-deceased by a son, Calvin Charles Smith, Jr., a brother, William Nas; a granddaughter, Jennifer L. Smith, a grandson, Richard Preen, Jr.; a son-in-law, Richard Preen, Sr.; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Nas; and her cats, Jenny and Toby. FUNERAL NOTICE: A graveside service for Eleanor C. VanOrden will be held Saturday, February 11, at 11 a.m., at Pittsfield Cemetery with Pastor Sigmund Sadzinski officiating. (Those attending are invited to meet inside the cemetery gate at 10:45 a.m.) Calling hours will be Friday, from 2 to 4 and 6 and 8 p.m., at DERY FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. VanOrden may be made to the Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter or to the Berkshire Humane Society both in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
