Obituary Condolences

Elizabeth A. O'Brien 1946 - 2012 MARBLETOWN, NY Elizabeth A. O'Brien of Marbletown died on Thursday, March 1, 2012, at home in the close company of her loving and devoted family. She was 65 years old. Betty, daughter of Charles and Margaret (Murray) Reid, was born in Pittsfield, MA on March 11, 1946. Raised in Dalton, she was a 1964 graduate of Wahconah Regional High School and a 1967 graduate of Cooley Dickenson Hospital School of Nursing. Betty then worked for many years as a registered nurse in hospitals and home healthcare from Boston, MA to Kingston, NY. Betty's kind spirit, thoughtfulness, and her remarkable skills manifested themselves in her longtime vocation. On April 15, 1968, Betty married her husband, Daniel J. O'Brien, who survives her. Betty and Dan, sweethearts since high school and best friends, enjoyed spending time together and with family and their many friends throughout the Berkshires, Western Massachusetts, and Ulster County NY, where they lived since 1986. Betty particularly enjoyed holidays and birthdays, trips to Cape Cod, the Outer Banks, and Ireland. Betty loved Irish festivals, reading, gardening, cooking, and quilting. Betty and Dan have three daughters, Maggie, Maureen, and Katie. Betty's relationships with her husband and daughters were a testament to her fierce devotion to and unequivocal love for her family. Betty was a remarkable wife and mother; she was immensely proud and protective of her husband, her daughters, and her family. Those who were fortunate enough to know her were well familiar with Betty's warmth, dignity, intellect, and kindness. Her legacy does and will survive in the warm smiles and strong Irish spirit of her children and, in particular, her grandchildren, who Betty adored like no other. Betty leaves her loving husband of almost 44 years, Dan; daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren Maggie, Scott, Shannon and Rebecca Steele of Hinsdale, MA; daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren Maureen, Michael, Gabrielle and Michael Hinkley of Dalton, MA; daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren Kate, Aaron, Emma, Isabelle, and Daniel Rice of Accord, NY; her brothers Thomas Reid of Dalton, MA and James Reid of Spencer, MA, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. We are lessened by your passing, but we are far greater for having known you, Betty; our wife, mother, grandma, and friend. We love you dearly, and always will.
