Erica Winn

1919 - 2015 PITTSFIELD Erica Winn passed away Thursday at Berkshire Place in Pittsfield. Born June 11, 1919, daughter of Arthur Palme and Edith (Madan) Palme, Erica attended local schools, graduating from Pittsfield High School in 1937. Before her marriage to Ervin R. Winn in 1940, she worked at the Berkshire Life Insurance Company. Much of Erica's life was spent in volunteer activity throughout Berkshire County including fundraising activities for the United Way, Red Cross and others. She was active for many years in the Boy Scouts of America and served as president of the Pomeroy School PTA. As a Volunteer Auxillary member of the Berkshire Medical Center, she serviced on the Board of Directors of the Pittsfield Visiting Nurse Association and was a Representative to the Corporation at Berkshire Medical. Erica was a volunteer for over 40 years at the Medical Center Gift Shop and also provided volunteer assistance for many years at Hancock Shaker Village. Erica became the Director of Swimming for the Pittsfield Girl's Club in 1958 and served in that capacity for 23 years organizing teaching classes for aquatic related activities for schools, the handicapped, Red Cross water safety certification and other Berkshire County residents. Thousands of Pittsfields' girls learned to swim at the Pittsfield Girl's Club. Erica swam and played tennis, her two favorite pasttimes, several times each week, well into her 80's. In her 'spare time' she enjoyed baking cookies that were shared with friends and family. As a younger woman she enjoyed skiing at Jiminy Peak, camping with family on the Applachian Trail in VT, and blueberrying at many Berkshire locations, Mt. Greylock being her favorite. Erica was a resident of Pittsfield's Berkshire Place and lifetime member of the First Congregational Church of Pittsfield where she served as Deaconess and taught Sunday School for over 20 years. Her husband, Ervin, died in 1969. She is survived by three sons, Calvin Winn of Evergreen, CO, Charles Winn of Los Angeles, CA, and David Winn of Conover, NC, six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Irma Sission of Mill River, MA and Evelyn Provost of Sonora, CA.
