Estelle Pomerantz Obituary
Estelle Pomerantz

1916 - 2014 PITTSFIELD Estelle Pomerantz, 97, died peacefully Jan. 2, 2014, in Pittsfield with her beloved daughter, Susan, and wonderful caregivers by her side. She was born in Pittsfield on Oct. 8, 1916, to Peter and Gussie Selkowitz, the founders of the Pittsfield Rye Bakery. She learned baking from her mother who baked apple and blueberry pies for the bakery. Estelle became famous for her delicious chocolate fudge and maple walnut cakes. None of us has ever been able to duplicate them. She attended Tucker and Mercer schools and was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. She also attended George Williams College in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Estelle was always very proud of the fact that she won a gold coin for her mastery of French. She also played the piano beautifully. Estelle was a child of the 20s and 30s. She loved to tell about how frightened and excited she was when the police periodically raided her uncle's apartment across the hall from her parent's as he was a notorious bootlegger. She was married for 57 years to the love of her life, William (Bill), founder of the Berkshire Business Equipment Company and owner of the Berkshire Press. Bill died in 2002. She worked as the first receptionist for Dr David "Chick" Budnitz. Later, she was the bookkeeper at Milton Motors, which was founded by her late brother, Milton Selkowitz. In later years she was a real estate agent for Isgood Realty. She was also a avid Maj Jong player. Estelle was a long time member of Temple Anshe Amunim and sang in the choir. She was treasurer for 30 years for the Temple Sisterhood and was a longtime member of B'nai Brith and Hadassah. Her late brother, Larry Laine, was a famous bandleader. Her sister, Ruth Millowitz of Montreal died in 1992. She is survived by her sisters, Janice Selkowitz of Pittsfield and an older sister, Lillian Holtz (103) of Cranbury, N.J. Estelle is also survived by her children, Dr. Howard Pomerantz and his wife, Margie, of Los Gatos, Calif., and Susan Pomerantz and her wife, Debbie Miller, of New York City. Susan and Debbie have nine Emmy Awards between them. Susan works for ABC Television where she is an Associate Director for The View. Debbie is the Director of The Wendy Williams Show. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Shoshanna Hnat and her husband, Mark, of Henderson Nev., and two great-grandchildren, Emmet and Aviva. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will take place Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Temple Anshe Amunim 26 Broad St., Pittsfield, with Rabbi Joshua L. Breindel, Spiritual Leader officiating. Burial will follow in the Pittsfield Cemetery (Temple Anshe Amunim Section). Shiva will be observed Sunday, Jan. 5, from 4 to 7 p.m and Monday, Jan. 6, from 2 to 5 p.m. at 434 Williams St., Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made directly to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, 877 South St., Suite 1W, Pittsfield, Ma. 01201.
