Frances "Freshy" Carty
1918 - 2014 LEE Frances Carty, 95, of West Park St. in Lee, died Thursday at her home, with her family at her side. She was born in Lee on Dec. 4, 1918, the daughter of Alex and Edna Clay Faxon . She was a 1936 graduate of Lee High School and, in 1940, graduated from Simmons College in Boston, Mass. After her graduation, she worked in Boston for the Home for Aged Men and then, at M.I.T. in the Radiation Lab. She was a volunteer at the YWCA in Boston and volunteered for the USO during WWII. She returned to Lee in 1954 and in 1968 began her long career in teaching at St. Mary's School, the adult evening program at Lee High School, the College Internship Program in Lee, and the Lee Youth Association homework help program. She was named teacher of the year in the College Internship Program and one of its dorms was named the Carty House. She retired from her many years of teaching at the age of 89. While in Lee, she served on the executive board of the Lee VNA. She was a Girl Scout Troop Leader. She served on the Advisory Board at the College Internship Program and collaborated on the history of St. Mary's School. Frances was a communicant of St. Mary's Church where she was a Eucharist Minister. While at St. Mary's School, she ran the baseball card and stamp club. She loved her family, teaching, stamp and baseball card collecting, reading, anything Boston, and Prince Edward Island. Her husband William F. Carty, whom she married Feb. 14, 1942, died in July of 1981. She leaves her son, William "Terry" Carty of Lee; three daughters, Deborah C. Arvanitis and her husband, Dean, of Castle Rock, Colo., Sharon A. Terry of Lee, and Margaret T. Carty of East Greenbush, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Jared (Melanie), Nicole, Alec, Jonathan (Grace), Leah and Patrick; three great-grandchildren, Timothy, Nathan, and Isaac; her extended family, Don Rice, Rhonda Drain, Carl Sorel, Keri and Aaron Wade, Mike and Missy Drain, Liam and Logan Wade, her longtime friend and caregiver, Marilyn Frink, and her devoted dog, June Bug. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral for Frances will be held Monday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Lee with a Liturgy of Christian Burial, with Msgr. John Bonzagni, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.
