Frederick T. Kurpiel, Sr.

1918-2013 ADAMS Mr. Frederick Theophile Kurpiel, Sr., 94, formerly of 3 Baskin Lane, Adams, died early Thursday morning, January 10, 2013, at Sweet Brook Care Center in Williamstown.

He was born in Adams on March 26, 1918, a son of the late Teofil and Anna (Bednarczyk) Kurpiel, and attended Adams schools.

He was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the 816th Engineer Aviation Battalion of the US Army Corps of Engineers in the European Theater, until his Honorable Discharge in 1945. His company was among the first American troops to arrive in England in 1942.

Mr. Kurpiel worked as a Master Mechanic in the Power Transformer Division of General Electric Co. in Pittsfield until his retirement.

He was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams, and was supervisor of maintenance at St. Stanislaus Cemetery for 19 years. He was a member of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Society; Adams Post 160 American Legion; GE Quarter Century and Pensioner's Clubs; Berkshire County Senior Citizens; and was a Past Commander for the Disabled American Veterans. Always a strong athlete, Fred was an instructor at Turn Hall in Adams, and in 1940 won a Bronze Medal competing nationally in the 100 Yard freestyle swimming event as a member of the Polish Falcons Club in Pittsfield. He and his late wife were also gym instructors for St. Stanislaus School for many years. He also was a Scouting leader for Cub and Boy Scouts and Explorer Posts in Adams, and had also coached Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball.

Fred served as an Adams Town Meeting Member for 38 years, was a Town Constable for many years, and was a Deputy Sherriff for Berkshire County for many years.

His wife, the former Rose Marie Moser, whom he married at Fort Dix, N.J., before leaving for the European Theater in 1942, died on February 25, 1991.

He is survived by two sons, Frederick T. Kurpiel, Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Peachtree City, Ga.; and Mark A. Kurpiel of Carrollton, Texas; five Grandchildren, Derick, Ashley, Mandie and Amber Kurpiel; and Emily Henrich; three Great Grandchildren, Parker and Mason Kurpiel and Mia Rose Henrich, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph and Frank Kurpiel.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held on Monday, January 14th, at 9 a.m. from the PACIOREK FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St. Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams.

Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery, Adams.

Calling hours are Sunday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
