Frederick Daniel Shea Jr.

1939 - 2015 NORTH ADAMS Frederick Daniel Shea Jr., 75 of 143 Notch Rd, passed on Friday May 15. He was born in Springfield, Mass. on October 9, 1939 a son of the late Frederick and Rosellen (South-gate) Shea. He attended Drury High School Trade School. As a very young man he worked at the YMCA as a life guard and swimming instructor. He was also a member of the YMCA men's wrestling team. He was such a talented wrestler that he went to the Western New England Championship and was slated to go to the Olympics. Fred was employed at the Photech paper plant in Williamstown for over 30 years as a millwright. He was also president of I.U.E. Local #224 Union at the plant. He was a longtime member of the Greylock Community Club in North Adams. Fred was a gunsmith since the early 1960's.It was a trade that he had a huge passion and talent for like no other. He was a lifetime member of the N.R.A. Fred was a true family man. His family, whether parent, in-law, or child, were always number one. He was always "The man to call!" Mostly because he always had a smart, easy fix for everything. He was "The guy" who never turned his back on anyone who ever needed him, or his help. Fred was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to fish, and hunt everything from deer to squirrels and by the way, you had to eat everything! There was no waste. He respected the outdoors as much as he loved it! Fred was known as "Big Bird." His great friends from Florida Mountain always called him that throughout the years. He was the biggest, kindest man they knew. He married the love of his life, our mother, on May 9, 1959. They raised four beautiful children in their 56 years of marriage. Which, as he always said "best choice of my life, my little chicka-dee!, was the name he always called our mother. So, to everyone, this was Frederick D. Shea Jr. son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. The best man we've ever known. Our hero and protector always! Thanks for everything Dad!
