G. John Velyvis

1931-2014 G. John Velyvis, 82 of 104 Chenaille Terrace North Adams, MA died Thursday February 20, 2014 at his home. He was born in Vilkaviskis, Lithuania on December 8, 1931, son of Joseph and Anna (Jurksaitis) Velyvis. As a young child, he left Lithuania with his family after the Russian invasion. The family lived in Germany for about three years, until they settled in Toronto, Canada. He attended schools in Toronto and graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in mechanical engineering. John later received his master's degree from RPI. At age 32, he came to North Adams to work at Sprague Electric Co., where he worked for 17 years. John then worked at Tansitor in Bennington, VT until he started his own company, Gseal in the Windsor Mill in North Adams. He operated the company, which was a manufacturer of glass to metal seals, until his retirement. While he was at Sprague Electric, John was awarded a patent which showed how tantalum was bonded to glass. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and taught CCD. John also served as a Boy Scout Leader with Troop 70 in Williamstown. He was an active member of the Northern Berkshire YMCA where he taught boxing to many young people. John also coached youth soccer for many years. Survivors include his wife, the former Claire C. Allessio, whom he married on July 17, 1965. One daughter; Kristen Adele Velyvis PhD and her husband, Thomas Zinnen of Madison, WI., Two sons; Dr. John Henry Velyvis MD and his wife, Melissanne of Novato, CA and Dr. Peter Henry Velyvis DDS, and his wife, Christine of Wellesley, MA., Eight Grandchildren; Jennifer Velyvis, Zachary Velyvis, Ella Velyvis, Claire Zinnen, William Zinnen, Charles Velyvis, Jacob Velyvis, and Leo Velyvis. He also leaves two sisters; Anna Vindasius of Danville, CA and Stephanie Fehn of Morristown, NJ; and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers are deceased including Algirdas Velyvis and Romas Velyvis. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral for John Velyvis will be Monday February 24, 2014 at 10:15 AM from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St. North Adams, MA followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Pittsfield. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 2-5 PM.
