Garrett F. Collins Jr.
1939-2014 HINSDALE Mr. Garrett F. Collins, Jr., 74, of Hinsdale, a former longtime resident of Stockbridge, died on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at Berkshire Medical Center, Pittsfield. He was born in Pittsfield on October 22, 1939, a son of the late Garrett F. Collins Sr., and Josephine Goodwin Collins. He was a class of 1957 graduate from St. Joseph High School in Pittsfield. He then went on to earn his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education from the former North Adams State Teachers College. Mr. Collins worked for many years as a math teacher at Reid Middle School in Pittsfield until retiring. Earlier he had taught in Washington, Mass. and Caracas, Venezuela. He was a parishioner of St. Patrick's Church, Hinsdale. He was the Vice President of the Pittsfield Federation of Teachers, he was on the Board of Directors of the Credit Union of the Berkshires and was a member of the Hinsdale Lake Management Committee. He enjoyed extensive worldwide traveling, was a sports car enthusiast and an avid reader. Mr. Collins is survived by his sister, Jeanne Collins Ryan of Woodside, N.Y.; his brother, Philip G. Collins of Hinsdale; two nieces, Susan Ryan Gallo and Dawn M. Collins; four nephews, Joseph J. Ryan Jr., Garrett C. Ryan, Christopher Ryan and Michael G. Collins. He is also survived by six grandnieces and two grandnephews. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law , Joseph J. Ryan Sr. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be on Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m. from the BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 525 Main St., Dalton, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, Hinsdale. Burial will be at a later date at the convenience of the family. Calling hours are Friday from 2 to 4 pm. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hinsdale Firemen's Association Ambulance Squad through the funeral home.
