George M. Harrington, Sr.

1927 - 2013 PITTSFIELD George M. Harrington, 85, of West Housatonic Street, Pittsfield, passed away at Berkshire Medical Center on March 1, 2013, after a long illness.

Born April 17, 1927, in Tyringham, he was the son of James and Dora Evelyn Grover Harrington. He attended schools in Lanesboro and Cheshire and then joined the Army from 1945-1947. He was an expert marksman serving in Austria and Germany with the Rainbow Division elite squad and "The Big Red One." Following his time in the Army, he worked at General Electric Company for 37 years. He retired in May of 1989. He enjoyed bowling in the G.E. league, hunting deer and rabbit, and excelled in basketball in Cheshire High School and also baseball, Richmond three Ace Semi -Pro. He attended St. Mark Church in Pittsfield. His wife, Eileen Patricia Pires, whom he married May 19, 1951 and who he took care of for 34 years after an accident, passed away May 6, 2002.

Survivors include sons, George E. Harrington Jr., Thomas Harrington, and daughter Kellie Harrington- Alexander, all of Pittsfield; brothers John Harrington and wife Kitty, Burton Harrington and wife Mary, William Harrington and wife Shirley, Thomas Harrington and wife Carm; sisters, Mary Shoemaker and husband Al, and Dora "lucky" Mazzeo; also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was also survived by his 14-year-old cat Angel and longtime friend and caregiver Mike Toner.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Eismann Harrington, and Alan F. Harrington; a sister, Madeline "Sue" North, and brothers James Harrington Jr. and Clayton Harrington.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for George M. Harrington will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at 11 am at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East Street, Pittsfield MA 01201. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery next to his wife with full Military Honors. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 4-7 pm at the funeral home.
