George James Jones

19312013 PITTSFIELD George James Jones, 81, of 161 Madison Ave., died Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Pittsfield on July 9, 1931, a son of George F. and Ella M. Ellery Jones, he was a 1950 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

A Korean War veteran, he served with the United States Navy from Sept. 25, 1951 to Sept. 23, 1955.

Mr. Jones was first employed as manager of the former A&P Store on Elm Street for 25 years. In 1978, he went to work for the Pittsfield Public Schools where he was a senior custodian. He was last assigned to Morningside Community School from where he retired in 1996.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He enjoyed the outdoors. He was an avid Patriots and Red Sox fan.

Mr. Jones leaves his wife, the former Joanne Flanagan, whom he married July 2, 1955, in St. Joseph's Church.

He is also survived by a daughter, Kathleen A. Malumphy, and her husband, Bernard, of Pittsfield; two sons, Michael T. Jones and his wife, Sally, of Oakdale, Conn., and John A. Jones and his wife, Sharon, of Northfield, Mass.; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; as well as a sister, Eileen Abriel of Pittsfield, and a daughter-in-law, Christine Jones of Florence, Mass.

He was pre-deceased by a son, Timothy F. Jones, who died August 4, 2010; and three brothers, Robert Jones, Richard Jones, and William Jones.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for George James Jones will be held Saturday, February 9, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m., at St. Joseph's Church celebrated by Rev. Msgr. Michael A. Shershanovich, Pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the DERY FUNERAL HOME.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Jones may be made to Hospice Care in The Berkshires in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
